The Comet Show
I was planning on attending a national meeting in Philadelphia, when I noticed that the Flecktones would be playing nearby during that week. I was able to get a ticket for the show. When I packed for the trip I also tossed my mics, D-8 and a mic clamp into my luggage.
The show ended up being memorable on several counts.
While we were queuing up to get into this GA show, we could see Comet Hale-Bopp shining through the suburban skyglow of the cold, crisp, and clear March sky.
I was near the front of the line and was able to get into the front-row center of the balcony, which hung over the main floor, fifty feet from the stage. I clamped my mics to the railing, the equivalent of being FOB with a 20 foot mic stand. The recording picks up the energy of the crowd without being annoyingly "chatty."
The Haverford students and others were really amped up. The band fed off that energy and delivered a stellar show.
Since the Flecktones would be playing the Berks Jazz Fest with Bruce Hornsby the next day, they took a few jazz standards for a test ride. Interestingly, they didn't play Nardis or Ramblin' with Bruce.
